How To Spot A Scam
We are aware that lately a number of our tenants have been emailed from addresses that at a glance appear similar to britanniapropertyservices.com. These emails ask our tenants to pay their rent into alternative banking details, following an official correspondence of a similar nature that we sent out back in July 2024.
We are working with our IT partners to understand how these agents are intercepting communications from our tenants, in order to pose as us. We have also raised the matter with West Midlands Police as a victim of cyber-crime.
Following this situation, we have changed the way we do things, and will NEVER ask our tenants to change payment details by email, SMS, or over the phone on an unrecognised / withheld number. If you receive any communications of this nature, you are strongly advised to contact our Selly Oak office, to verify that this is in fact an official request.
Moving forward, our emails will also always come with the following message as part of the signature:
Please note: we no longer give out our bank details by email, SMS, or over the phone on an unrecognised / withheld number. This is following a number of illicit attempts by unknown agents, trying to make contact with our tenants and redirect payments fraudulently. If you require our bank details, then please call us on 0121 472 2200, or visit the FAQs section of our website.
If you do not see this message in the email- QUESTION THE AUTHENTICITY.
We assure all our customers that there have been no data leaks, and that any personal information we hold is safe and secure, as required by GDPR.
The prominence of the internet has led to more and more sophisticated attempts to enact criminal activity; we thank you for your understanding in this matter, and we encourage all our customers to act with diligence and care when it comes to managing their tenancy with us.
HOW CAN I TELL IF THE EMAIL IS FROM YOU?
In the following example we make clear the signs that warn you against an email’s authenticity:
If in doubt of the authenticity of an email or communication you have received, you should always call us on 0121 472 2200 to verify. Please be vigilant, and be mindful that scams are on the rise!
